Company History

1996
dimedis is founded on the 1st of March by Wilhelm Halling as a venture capital startup in Cologne, Germany. As of December 1996 the Technomedia Kapitalbeteiligungsgesellschaft Köln mbH takes a stake in dimedis.

The first project is Real Time Image, an online image database for advertising agencies. Real Time Image enables picture material from eight different picture agencies to be searched online and is thus one of the very first business portals. After only nine months users are able to access more than 80,000 digitalised images.

1997
dimedis is responsible for the development of one of the first online projects run by the major European television company RTL. This project enables RTL teletext content to be also accessed online.
Additional project: The first website of the television supplement Prisma is the work of dimedis.

1998
Using its own database-supported content management system, @it, dimedis designs the Internet presences of the Departments of Finance, Justice and Economics in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. This is followed by projects for EMI Electrola, the district government in Münster and the NRW Media Forum.

2000
The visitor information system designed especially for trade fairs, VIS, is created and used for the first time during the drupa 2000 trade fair at the Messe Düsseldorf, where it is still in use today. The list of @it customers grows with the addition of Bochum Gelsenkirchener Straßenbahn AB (a tramway company), Continentale Versicherung AG (an insurance company) and the Deutsche Entwicklungsdienst (the German Development Service).

2003
At the end the year the company's legal status changes. From now on the company is in the hands of seven partners, whose managing partner is Wilhelm Halling. In addition, the company moves to the Dillenburgerstraße in the Kalk district of Cologne, where it remains to this day.

2005
In 2005 the development of the digital signage solution kompas begins, which is mainly connected with a project carried out by CentrO Oberhausen, a local shopping mall. CentrO wanted to implement a digital signage project that required a content management system to display its data; this is the birth of kompas.
(kompas= Kunden Orientiertes Marketing- und Produkt- Anzeige-System = customer-orientated marketing and product display system)
This project was the first in Europe to use the then-new mobile telephony technology (HSDPA) to synchronize the data on digital signage screens. More than 60 advertising screens spread over the entire mall were controlled using this technology, which at the time was itself still in the pilot phase.

2006
kompas is developed further, resulting in the digital wayfinding system kompas wayfinding, which makes its début at the Stuttgart exhibition centre Messe Stuttgart.

2007
FairMate, the comprehensive entrance solution for trade fairs, is introduced as a further development of VIS.

2008
dimedis is able to win the global tobacco company BAT (British American Tobacco) as a kompas customer. This involves a huge challenge: 2,000 sales outlets have to be equipped with a digital signage screen within six months.
Since then the number of sales outlets has increased to over 4,000 – each with up to three screens – in Germany, Austria and Switzerland and the Netherlands.

2009
The trade fair organisers Reed Exhibitions Deutschland and dmexco become dimedis customers and use FairMate. New FairMate modules are introduced: FairMate compact and FairMate Cashier.

2010
Parts of the Messe Düsseldorf's new visitor management system such as the online ticket shop are supplied by dimedis.

2011
With Stockholmsmässan, dimedis is able to win another large trade fair organiser as a FairMate customer.

2012
Borussia Dortmund introduces kompas in its stadium.
Also in Dortmund: dimedis wins the Westfalenhallen as a further FairMate customer. The Westfalenhallen thus becomes the first customer to use both FairMate and kompas.

2013
With the release of version 6.0, kompas acquires an interface for Adobe Edge Animate.

2014
FairMate undergoes an extensive relaunch. Besides repositioning the product (which, among other things, results in new product names) and revising the layout, a new product website is launched.
Moreover, dimedis is able to win a lot of new customers in 2014: These include Jäger TTC, Schalke 04 and Greven as kompas customers and HärtereiKongress and AMAZON Web Services Summit Berlin as FairMate customers.

With the new kompas version 7.0, it becomes possible to assign different competencies to individual users using the user rights management system. Furthermore, kompas now enables information to be displayed in split-screen modus as well as on video walls.

2015
dimedis grows to over 50 members of staff and wins yet another large FairMate customer: Koelnmesse. Bosch is a new costumer for kompas.

2016
Wayfinding project in Great Britain: Outdoor columns in Coventry and Rushmoor provide orientation thanks to kompas wayfinding. Hamburg Messe is very impressed with FairMate.
dimedis celebrates its 20th anniversary.

2017

kompas appears in version 8.5. The Stadtwerk Karlsruhe is a new kompas customer.
